“I need to keep in mind that throughout teaching, I will have good days followed by bad days followed by good days, and so on. It is a constantly changing cycle that no teacher completely gets a hold of. My goal is to do everything I can to make the good days and moments happen more and more often. I know I am capable of it just as I know my students are capable of it.”

I wrote those words at the beginning of the school year, at the beginning of my career as a public school educator. Now, as I am in the thick of it and feeling broken by the system and the needs of my students, I desperately needed to read my own words. I just needed to hear the voice of optimism that I entered this work with speak to me and tell me, “It is possible, it is happening - receive everything with simplicity.”

And next week, when I have turned in this dreaded grad school portfolio and procrastination is no longer my mistress, I will write again. I will write for myself and for the stories I have to tell. They have been bubbling up, and it’s time to set them free.

Jason Molina passed away this weekend. He was a luminary of the ’00s indie songwriter scene and made music under his own name, as Songs: Ohia, and with the band Magnolia Electric Company.

I was first introduced to his music in late 2001, when my band got what we thought was the test pressing for our LP. We gathered around the turntable, expecting to hear hardcore punk, and instead this gripping, dark acoustic music came out. Our reactions flashed from WHAT THE FUCK? to WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? IT’S AWESOME!

I forget how we figured out that the album was “Didn’t It Rain” by Songs: Ohia, but we all became fans. I was listening to a lot of acoustic music at the time, and Songs: Ohia’s music fit in the rotation with Will Oldham, Cat Power and Neil Young.

I saw him live once in 2003 as Magnolia Electric Company, opening for The Mountain Goats on the VCU campus. The show left me inspired by how much one person with a guitar could convey. I remember staying up all night after, tripping on mushrooms on my porch in the Virginia fall, going inside to watch the pattern on the rug wiggle and my friends prank call Aaron from Seaweed.

I share these anecdotes from my early 20s to show that Jason Molina’s music was a big part of my life at a formative time, when every emotion felt amplified. His songs fit the feeling, and conjure it again as I revisit them.

Rest In Peace.

hey, i am planning on moving to chicago soon and have been interested in doing some substitute teaching. i can't do it in wisconsin without a full teaching licence, but i have a master's degree. do you have any info on how to get into it?

My vice principal told me that there was a freeze on hiring new subs for CPS. I don’t really know a lot about the process. You don’t need a teaching license, I do know that. From the subs I’ve seen at my school, it also seems you don’t need to possess a fully functioning brain, either. But I do think you have to take some test, etc. It seems like a lot of hoops to jump through. Sorry I’m not being more helpful.
